Psyllium (Metamucil, Konsyl, Hydrocil, Fiberall, various)

Category:

  • Bulk laxative

Description:

  • Bulk fiber; psyllium colloid

Indications:

  • Constipation, irritable bowel syndrome

  • Diverticular disease

  • Spastic colon

  • Hemorrhoids

  • Hypercholesterolemia (not FDA approved)

Contraindications:

  • Intestinal obstruction

  • Fecal impaction

Precautions:

  • Pregnancy category C

  • Phenylketonurics (sugar-free preparations may contain aspartame)

  • Abdominal pain, nausea, or vomiting

Adverse Reactions (Side Effects):

  • GI: anorexia, bloating, constipation, esophageal or bowel obstruction, flatulence, nausea, vomiting

Dosage:

Administered orally

  • Adult:   PO 1-2 rounded teaspoonfuls or 1-2 packets in 8 ounces of liquid 1-4 times daily; 1-2 wagers with 8 ounces of liquid 1-4 times daily

  • Child 6-11 years:  PO ½ to 1 teaspoonful in 4 ounces of liquid 1-3 times daily
