Thiabendazole (Mintezol)

Category:

Antihelmintic

Indications:

Strongyloiiasis (threadworm)
Cutaneous larva migran (creeping eruption)
Visceral larva migrans

Precautions:

Pregnancy category C
Monitor patients with hepatic or renal dysfunction.
Helminthic infections are very communicable. Treat the entire family/household.
Adhere to strict hygiene to prevent re-infection.
Not necessary to use a post-therapy laxative to assist in purging of worms.

Adverse Reactions (Side Effects):

Headache, dizziness, drowsiness, psychic disturbances
Rash, pruritis
GI upset (anorexia, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, cramping/pain)
Hematuria, enuresis, malodorous urine (asparagus-like smell)
Tinnitis, fever, visual changes

Dosage:

Administered orally

Adult:

<68 kg: 22mg/kg per dose for 2 doses a day for 2 consecutive days
>68kg: 1.5 grams per dose for 2 doses a day for 2 consecutive days

Visceral:

Administer same dosing guidelines, except continue therapy for 7 days
