Cyclopentolate (Cyclogyl, AK-Pentolate)

Description:

  • Mydriatic, cycloplegic, ophthalmic anticholinergic

Indications:

  • Cycloplegic refraction

  • Mydriasis

Contraindications:

  • Infants < 3 months

  • Narrow-angle glaucoma

Precautions:

  • Pregnancy category C

  • Elderly (more risk of increased intraocular pressure)

  • Infants, children with spastic paralysis or brain damage

Adverse Reactions (Side Effects):

  • CNS: ataxia, behavior disturbances, confusion, disorientation, failure to recognize people, grand mal seizures, hallucinations, irritability, psychotic reaction, somnolence

  • CV: tachycardia

  • EENT: blurred vision, conjunctivitis, eye dryness, photophobia, increased intraoculary pressure, burning upon instillation

  • GI: abdominal discomfort/distention, dry mouth, vomiting

  • MISC: bladder distension, dry skin, fever, flushing, irregular pulse, respiratory depression

Dosage:

Administered as an ophthalmic solution

  • Adult:            

    • OPHTH SOL 1 drop of a 0.5%-2% solution, then 1 drop in 5 minutes if necessary

  • Child (> age 6):  

    • OPHTH SOL 1 drop of a 0.5%-2% solution, then 1 drop of a 0.5%-1% solution if necessary
