Advanced Maternal Age

Advanced maternal age is associated with twice the rate of the following complications:

  • gestational diabetes
  • placenta previa
  • premature delivery
  • stillbirth (i.e., death of fetus after 20 weeks of pregnancy)
  • In addition, pregnancy at a later age may be further complicated by the presence of more comorbid conditions (such as HTN, pregestational DM, heart disease, etc.) which carry their own risk during pregnancy.

Hopefully, the patient will consider this information in making family planning decisions.
