For non-diabetic, overweight/obese women (BMI>25kg/m2), reproductive age women considering pregnancy (regardless of their parity):

  • Testing for pre-diabetes/type II diabetes is indicated for all women who also have one or more risk factors for diabetes (including a history of gestational diabetes).

  • Many women who experience gestational diabetes will go on to develop Type II DM. Many of these women may not know that they are diabetic or their risk factors may not be obvious to them (obesity or overweight). It is important to be vigilant in making this diagnosis so that optimal glycemic control can be achieved before and during her next pregnancy.
