When reproductive age women are diagnosed with HTN, they should be counseled about their reproductive future – pregnancy, how it is affected by their condition, and the risks their medications pose to potential pregnancies.

 

Hypertension:

  • Increases risk of superimposed preeclampsia

  • Increases risk of perinatal mortality and neonatal morbidity

  • Can make the diagnosis of preeclampsia difficult

  • Hypertension is associated with several adverse outcomes:

  • premature birth

  • intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR)

  • fetal demise

  • placental abruption

  • cesarean delivery

  • small for gestational age infants

  • significantly increased perinatal mortality
