General Biographical Description: Paula J. Adams Hillard, MD, is currently Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Stanford University School of Medicine where she serves as Chief of the Division of Gynecologic Specialties. Until May of 2007, she was Professor at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and in the Department of Pediatrics. She served as Chief of Gynecology and Obstetrics at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center where she founded and directed the fellowship program in Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology. She attended the University of North Carolina from 1970-73, earning a B.S. in Zoology, and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa in 1971. She obtained her M.D. from Stanford University School of Medicine in 1977, and completed a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, in 1981. She then joined the faculty of the University of Virginia as Director of Ambulatory Ob-Gyn. She was a member of the department of Ob-Gyn at the University of Cincinnati from 1984-2007, and was the Director of Women’s Health for the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine She has been active on a number of national medical committees, including chair of the American College Obstetricians and Gynecologists' (ACOG) Committees on Patient Education, Adolescent Health, and Guidelines for Women’s Health; she is a past member of the Gynecologic Practice Committee, and a current member of the Document Review Committee. She is an examiner for the American Board of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. She is a past president of the North American Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology. She is an active contributor to the literature in adolescent gynecology and contraception with over 100 journal articles and abstracts published. She has served as an editorial board member for a number of professional publications and is an ad hoc reviewer for a number of other professional journals. She speaks frequently at national and international meetings and postgraduate courses on topics in ambulatory obstetrics and gynecology, pediatric and adolescent gynecology, contraception, cervical cancer screening, interpersonal violence, and primary care. She is an Associate Editor of a major textbook, Novak’s Gynecology, the editor of the 5-Minute Consult in Obstetrics and Gynecology (published May 2008), and the author of over 50 book chapters on women’s health. She has been a consultant and a member of tasks forces and committees for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the American Medical Association, American Cancer Society, and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. In addition to her work with professional publications, Dr. Hillard has extensive experience with the consumer press. She has appeared on national television programs including an appearance on the News Hour with Jim Lehrer. She was a contributing editor to Parents magazine from 1982-1990, writing a monthly column on pregnancy and birth - and currently acts as an editorial consultant to women’s publications such as Good Housekeeping, Woman’s Day, Cosmopolitan, Redbook, Glamour, YM, and Seventeen. Her clinical work has earned the designation as one of the “Best Doctors for Women” from Good Housekeeping Magazine.
