A rapid reference

SGGT (γGT)

SGGT is found in the liver and kidney, but the liver contributes the largest amount of SGGT to the blood.

Although it can be used to evaluate liver disease, it is widely used in the monitoring of alcoholic patients. Relatively small amounts of imbibed alcohol can have significant effects on the SGGT levels.

Elevations found in:

  • Occult alcholoism
  • Liver disease
  • Gall bladder disease
  • Pancreatitis
  • Barbiturate use

Normal Values*

Men 8-20 U/L

Women

4-18 U/L

*These are general values taken from a variety of sources. The actual normal values may vary from lab to lab and from one type of testing protocol to another.
