Though we spend lots of time focused on how maternal and fetal outcomes change if a woman contracts “x” condition, is exposed to “x,” or does “x” during pregnancy, it is important to step back and realize that there are many ways to optimize maternal and fetal outcomes before a woman becomes pregnant. This is not merely the duty of the Ob/Gyn, but is more commonly the duty of every primary care physician who takes care of pre/reproductive age women. In this module, we will present information on preconception care as it relates to:

  • Immunizations
  • Chronic HTN
  • Diabetes
  • Genetic abnormalities
  • Advanced maternal age
  • Substance abuse
  • Nutrition & exercise
  • Medications
  • Environmental hazards
  •

    What is Preconception Care?

Preconception care consists of the identification of those conditions that could affect a future pregnancy or fetus and that may be amenable to intervention.1

Therefore, all health encounters during a woman’s reproductive years should include counseling on appropriate medical care and behavior to optimize pregnancy outcomes.
